JSW-OESA WINNER 2014

The 3rd Jigme Singye Wangchuck Outstanding Environmental Stewardship Award (JSW-OESA) was conferred by HRH Ashi Chimi Yangzom Wangchuck, coinciding with the opening ceremony of the 14th International Society of Ethnobiology Congress to The Forest Protection and Surveillance Team for their dedicated and sincere service to the protection and curbing down of illegal wildlife trade. Despite the risk associated with their lives, the team had made tremendous progress in apprehending various poachers and series of illegal wild life transactions. They also seized many wild life contrabands and identified smugglers within the country and outside. The maximum seizure of tiger skin and bones by the team cumulates up to six numbers within two years. The other unlimited seizures includes, musk pods, bear biles, leopard skins and bones, elephant tusks, otter skins and the recent hot issue on Tokay gecko lizards. Within a span of six months, they apprehended about thirteen specimens of the above mentioned lizard. The team has also shown great progress in the seizure of red sanders and other medicinal plants. The team has also detected many illegal felling of trees and apprehension of the offenders nationwide.

The Jigme Singye Wangchuck Outstanding Environmental Stewardship Award (JSW-OESA) is conferred once every two years. It honours individuals, groups and institutions from all backgrounds for a lifetime of contribution towards ensuring the security and sustainability of Bhutan's pristine environment. It particularly merits people who have gone beyond the normal call-of-duty in their service towards environmental protection.
